Ali Farka Toure
Often
described as "the African John
Lee Hooker" . Mainly a guitarist, Ali also played calabash
and bongos. Like Hooker and Lightnin'
Hopkins favored low-pitched not-too-slow but definitely
not fast songs you don't need a lot of accompaniment
for. Your foot and your guitar are
enough.
Toure sings in several languages. He has been quoted
as saying that his songs are about education, work, love, and
society." Probably like Hooker, he was deeply inspired by many
generations of African music and African
Rhythms.
Toure came to attention of the commercial music world
close to the age of 50. In 1994's "Talking Timbuktu"
with Ry Cooder, earned a Grammy for Best World
Music Album.
During his musical career, Toure retreated for long
periods to a life of privacy, working his rice farm. He In the
